Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: What You Need to Know About Detection, Prevention, and Incontinence

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. While it is the most common cancer among men and about one-in-nine men over the age of 65 are diagnosed with it, it is a treatable and preventable cancer.

Early Detection is Key

If you're one of those guys who puts off or flat out avoids getting physicals, you're doing yourself a disservice. Catching prostate cancer in the early stages, especially if you are over 50, can save your life.

Know the Signs

In the early stages, it's hard to tell if you've got prostate cancer as the most common symptoms may just seem like signs of aging or linked to other ailments. However, here are the most common factors to be aware of...

  • Difficulty urinating, the frequent urge to urinate, or incontinence
  • Frequent nighttime urination and/or bowel movements
  • Painful urination or blood in the stream
  • Problems with ejaculation
  • Chronic constipation
  • Chronic pain in the lower back, upper thigh, or hips

Know Your History

We've mentioned age is a factor but so is family history. About 20% of prostate cancer diagnoses are known to be hereditary. Prostate cancer is also higher among African-American men and they have been known to get it at an earlier age. Have a talk with your elder relatives about possible health traits that may have been passed down.

Prevention is Possible

While age and family history are significant factors, so is lifestyle.  Here are ways to a happy and healthy prostate...

  • Eat more fresh, whole foods
  • Limit red meat and dairy foods
  • Cut down on alcoholic beverages
  • Exercise and maintain a healthy weight for your age and height
  • Get an annual physical
